Philosophy

​Dr. LaPilusa utilizes an extensive and comprehensive approach to treatment. His philosophy is grounded in the tradition of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and existential psychology. He focuses on mindfulness, identification of values, commitment to action and acceptance of pain in the aim of purpose and value-based living.

​He is proficient in both face-to-face treatment as well as telemedicine (telephone) based approaches.

​Dr. LaPilusa is a well-known and highly respected psychologist serving the greater San Diego area. He treats a wide variety of clients and patients out of two office locations in the heart of San Diego. He provides individual and couples therapy to clients and patients aging in range from 13 to 93-years-old. His treatment ranges from beginner to advanced level. So whether you are looking to learn basic coping skills or if you are interested in advanced strategies and philosophies, Dr. LaPilusa has a style and approach that will best fit you.

Currently, Dr. LaPilusa maintains a successful forensic practice. He is a Qualified Medical Evaluator in the state of California. He conducts independent medical evaluations, and psychological consultations within the Workers’ Compensation system. He has conducted psychological clearances for surgery, spinal cord stimulator trials, intrathecal morphine pump trials, bariatric surgery and fitness for duty. In addition, he provides second appeal evaluations for law enforcement pre-employment applicants. He has also served as a pre-employment psychological evaluator for the California Highway Patrol.

Dr. LaPilusa has conducted research in the areas of personality assessment, chronic pain, depression, and multicultural issues.
